TLSDF Details

Overview

TLSDF invites international volunteers to contribute to the success of its programs by donating their good will, time, and skills, while learning something new during the unique experience of working with a Thai non-governmental organization (NGO). Our friendly staff benefits greatly from the new ideas and experiences volunteers bring to the organization, and coordinate a variety of programs, allowing volunteers to choose the project that interests them most.

The Foundation is looking for individuals with:

Good health
Excellent English (oral and written) skills
Excellent communication, team work, and interpersonal skills
A university degree (or a minimum of 20 years old)
Time commitment of at least 2 months
Good computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc)
An honest and friendly personality and respect for children
The capacity to adapt and learn new ways of doing things
A willingness to travel and work in remote areas (if necessary)
An interest or experience in any of the following:
    Child rights
    Education and life skills promotion
    Teaching and preparation of learning materials
    Social and community development
    Community and children's group empowerment
    Childcare and psychosocial development
    Health care and promotion
    Social science research
Available Positions

Volunteers for most these projects will work at the TLSDF office in Chiang Mai and travel to field sites as necessary, with the exception of field site English instruction volunteers. Activity documentation is a project that may be easily combined with other volunteer projects. Volunteers for English instruction should have teaching experience, while volunteer for the website and media positions should have appropriate technology skills and experience.

Beginning Staff English Instruction

Responsibilities include:

  • »Conduct English needs assessment
  • »Prepare education materials
  • »Teach focused workshops for adult groups or individuals on listening and speaking, work-related vocabulary conversation, and basic reading and writing skills that accommodate the staff's schedule
  • »Create a process for staff self-evaluation and continued improvement
  • TLSDF will provide the space and basic materials for instruction.

    Advanced Staff English Instruction

    Responsibilities include:

  • »Conduct English needs assessment
  • »Prepare educational materials
  • »Teach focused workshops for adult groups or individuals on technical reading and writing skills, grammar, and fluency of conversation that accommodate the staff's schedule
  • »Create a process for staff self-evaluation and continued improvement
  • TLSDF will provide the space and basic materials for instruction.

    Website Design and Management

    Responsibilities include:

  • »Conduct a needs assessment of the TLSDF website
  • »Rebuild the site using the software of your choice
  • »Create graphics for the site
  • »Edit and expand the website's English content
  • »Train a staff person on maintaining and updating the site
  • TLSDF will provide content for the site, provide a space and computer (if necessary) for the work, have 3 or 4 sites picked out as models, and have flexible availability to work with the volunteer.

    Social Media Creation (OVC, ECCD, LSQE, OD&CRP)

    Responsibilities include:

  • »Create attractive Thai and English brochures and posters for program education and advocacy
  • »Train a staff person to create brochure and poster graphics, or other advocacy materials
  • TLSDF will provide content for advocacy materials, assist in translating and organizing the information, and provide a space and computer (if necessary) for the work.

    Activity Documentation (OVC, ECCD, LSQE, OD&CRP)

    Responsibilities include:

  • »Attend program activities and take photos and movies
  • »Create photo galleries and short videos of program events for website posts
  • »Document the event in English for website posts
  • »Maintain a system for managing program documentation, photos, and videos that can be expanded and transferred to a staff member
  • »Train staff members on photography and video editing techniques
  • TLSDF will provide transportation to and accommodation at field site activities, and will provide a space and computer (if necessary) for the work.

    Field Site English Instruction (OVC, ECCD, LSQE)

    Responsibilities include:

  • »Conduct English needs assessment at local partner organizations, such as schools and sub-district administration offices, and health centers
  • »Prepare educational materials
  • »Teach focused workshops for adults or children, groups or individuals
  • »Create a process for continued improvement
  • TLSDF will provide transportation to and accommodation at field sites and local partner organizations will provide space and basic materials for instruction.


    Minimum Duration: 8 weeks

    Accommodation:
    Cultural Canvas Thailand's modest Thai-style house is where most of your eating, sleeping and relaxing will take place. Our house, located on Wualai Road in the heart of the silver district, is just steps away from the Saturday Walking Street, a fantastic market with great shopping and delicious Thai treats. Our house is located slightly south of the moat and walking distance from the Chiang Mai Gate Market, Gad Gom (another great evening market) and a number of beautiful wats or temples.

    Food:
    Our in-house cook will provide two delicious, home-cooked Thai meals per day six days per week. A light breakfast is always available with cereal, fruit, toast, coffee and tea. On Sunday, volunteers can cook for themselves at the Home-Base or grab a bite to eat in one of the many near-by markets or restaurants. In Chiang Mai, a delicious meal costs roughly 0.75USD. Please let us know any specific dietary restrictions in advance so that all of your needs can be taken care of.

    Transportation:
    Cultural Canvas Thailand provides transportation to and from your placement.

    Support and Safety:

    The Cultural Canvas Thailand home-base is in a secure location with staff available 24-hours a day. Here you can receive international calls and internet access is within walking distance.

    In case of emergency, friends and family can call the home-base or use our convenient U.S. 24-hour hotline.

    In case of injury you will be admitted to one of Chiang Mai’s high-quality, private hospitals.

    We provide comprehensive medical insurance and emergency evacuation assistance.

    Application Process:

    The application and deposit should be received 90 days prior to the commencement of your chosen project. For late applications, please inquire regarding availability, as exceptions can be made.
    Full payment must be received 30 days prior to the commencement of your project in order to allow us enough time to provide you with the proper insurance and project placement.
